Ubiquitous computing education

Ubiquitous computing is defined by interconnected devices embedded in everyday objects that become part of daily work and leisure activities. Ubiquitous computing, or ubicomp, is a multidisciplinary field of study that explores the design and implementation of such embedded, networked computing systems. Due to the novel aspect of the technologies involved, teaching and training new innovators in this field are not well addressed through traditional programs and instruction. We must enhance ubicomp education through interdisciplinary perspectives by answering the why, what, and how questions:

  • Why: consider the grand challenges we expect our students to tackle in the world using ubiquitous computing (e.g. privacy, sustainability)
  • What: identify values, knowledge, and skills that students should acquire from ubiquitous computing education
  • How: invent new pedagogies for teaching ubiquitous computing
